From the Engineer
I founded Malevolent Noise Studios in early 2024 as a remote mixing and mastering service with the goal of creating something I found lacking in many remote-service studios: customer service and relationships. There are a plethora of studios out there that will take your tracks and mix and master them well with a reasonable turnaround. While this is a great concept as there are plenty of studios available now to artists who don’t live near a physical studio location, I noticed a few problems:
- Many of these studios had very poor communication. Artists didn’t feel involved in the process.
- Many were unclear about what was actually being done to the tracks. Were they mixed entirely in the box? Were drums sample-replaced? Were guitars re-amped? The world may never know.
- Most studios were a quick interaction without a lasting relationship or support.
When I originally cut my teeth working at various Studios and Live Sound companies in Central Florida, I became used to the dynamic interaction between Artist and Engineer. Sitting in the control room, trying out various pieces of gear, plug-ins, and techniques until we achieved the sound in the Artist’s head. While this isn’t necessarily possible in a remote environment, I sought to create a studio that brought the experience as close as possible to the magic of working with an engineer at an in-person studio.
I also wanted to create an accessible, affordable studio that could be booked by everyone from the hit-making professional to the budding Artist. Everyone deserves to receive the “rockstar treatment”, having their needs and desires met to reach the sound in their head. Are our prices lower than other studios? For sure. Audio isn’t just a business to us, it’s a passion, it’s fun. We’re not worried about charging Artists an arm and a leg, just enough to cover expenses to continue pushing out quality music.
